Good Evening Teachers and Staff,
I've been waiting to share this exciting information, but didn't want it to get lost in all the opening-of-the-school-year emails. :o) It's been a hectic start to say the least!
On November 6th, Tuesday (yes, it's Election Day) we are having a PD with international speaker, author and literacy expert Katie Garner. Ms. Garner uses a brain-based approach to teaching reading, writing and phonics instruction by infusing neuroscience into literacy and learning. Her practices are compatible with any existing program (including Wonders, MSL and GLAD) - it is NOT a new program. She uses effective strategies or Secret Stories for boosting existing reading curriculum and phonics instruction. As stated in our AcPlan, one of our goals for this 1819 school year is to Develop shared understanding of strategies & tools as related to the "Big Five" ( Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension)) - and to know what is expected from grade to grade. This is one way to strengthen our existing programs and build the curriculum coherence that our WASC self-study identified as a need.
We know that it's your day off; however, this was a viable option rather than trying to secure 25+ subs during a school day. Deb is generously offering a stipend to further encourage your participation. I am certain that it will be worth your time to hear what Katie Garner has to share about current neural research in how our brain works best, and how it speaks directly to Language, Experiences and Thinking. Her ultimate goal is to insure that you ALL walk away with practical and effective strategies to accelerate and prepare our early learners for success in literacy as well as to help our struggling readers in the upper grades to close the gap between "learning to read and reading to learn."
I'm sharing one of her many keynote presentations (fast-paced and dynamic speaker) if you want to know more about Katie Garner: Brain-based Learning, Reading and Phonics
During your articulation time and/or at staff meetings, we will be taking a survey of who can or would like to attend. It is open to everyone!! (Sorry, stipend limited to certificated staff)
Please mark your calendars! :o) Let me know if you have any questions,
Tamra
