Ho`okui After School Enrichment Program

Hi All, I hope you all are surviving these first weeks of school and had time to think about the Enrichment class you will be teaching for Ho`okui this year.  Well..... What is this? Campbell Complex 21st Century Grant is referred to as Ho`okui. This is a 5 year federal grant which we are in Year 4.  There are 4 objectives that we need to adhere to: #1:  Participants will demonstrate educational and social benefits and exhibit positive behavioral changes        (Students' attendance and behavior will improve) #2:  Offer a range of high-quality educational, developmental and recreational services         (Need to have homework/tutoring time, 30-45 minutes) #3:  Serve children and community members with the greatest need for expanded learning opportunities         (Tier 1 and 2, but not limited to.  We include all students.) #4:  Participants will demonstrate academic improvement based on formative and summative assessments given throughout the school year          ( 70% of students

See a former student? Submit to Kaimiloa Alumni Contact Form!

Hi everyone! As you saw from the most recent documentary at the beginning of the year, we are on a journey to reconnect to our former students (our Kaimiloa "alumni") - it is always so great when we run into parts of our Kaimiloa family and hear how much they loved school. If you happen to meet a former Kaimiloa student, please ask for their name and contact information, when they graduated and what they are currently doing now (role and workplace) . This will help us keep track and reconnect.  Fill out the form at bit.ly/kesalumni .  Thank you! --------------------------------------- Cecilia "CC" Chung Educator at  Kaimiloa Elementary School twitter.com/mschung808  www.linkedin.com/in/ceciliaedu Confidentiality Notice:  This e-mail message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and/or privileged information.  Any review, use, disclosure, or distribution by unintended recipients is prohibited.

November 6th PD Opportunity - PLEASE READ

Good Evening Teachers and Staff,   I've been waiting to share this exciting information, but didn't want it to get lost in all the opening-of-the-school-year emails. :o)  It's been a hectic start to say the least!  On November 6th, Tuesday (yes, it's Election Day) we are having a PD with international speaker, author and literacy expert Katie Garner.  Ms. Garner uses a brain-based approach to teaching reading, writing and phonics instruction by infusing neuroscience into literacy and learning.  Her practices are compatible with any existing program (including Wonders, MSL and GLAD) - it is NOT a new program.  She uses effective strategies or Secret Stories for boosting existing reading curriculum and phonics instruction.  As stated in our AcPlan, one of our goals for this 1819 school year is to  Develop shared understanding of strategies & tools as related to the "Big Five" ( Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension) ) - and to

Students's Needs

As we begin this new school year, please note any students you might have in your classroom who need uniforms and/or school supplies.  We have a surplus of new uniforms (Size Small and Medium/Large) donated to us on hand.  There are many times our families may have only enough funds to purchase a couple of t-shirts and during the rainy season, it's difficult to wash and dry the t-shirts with enough time for students to have a clean t-shirt to wear each day.  Pls. let your VP know if this is the case with any of your students as we can get the t-shirts for them.  If students wear smaller shirts than what we have on hand, we can also order smaller sizes with our school funds. See counselors if you notice students are running out of school supplies as we have donations for those items too. No child should be excluded from field trips as it is an extension and enrichment of lessons going on in classrooms.  We have funds for those students whom you know can not attend a field tr

Open House

Last year our Open House was from 5:30 - 6:30 PM but we had 5 rotations so families were rushing through classrooms following the bell schedule.  Because of this, parents who had 3 or less children attending our school were done very early and left campus.  There were some families however who were still on campus which may it seem like a long evening for teachers who didn't have visitors in classroom and a very short Open House for families with only 1 child. This year, we start earlier but still have a 2 hour block with only 3 rotations.  This will give a longer period of time for teachers to speak with their families and for those who are done visiting classrooms early, we have two other settings they can visit to find out more about what our school is doing in the way of curriculum extension. The Library and MakerSpace for parents finished with classroom visitation(s) is an opportunity to visit these spaces and experience some of the learning their children will be going th
